American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first humane society established in North America. Today, it is one of the largest humane societies in the world.

It was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 to prevent animal cruelty throughout the USA. Its headquarters is in New York City, and has a presence not only locally, but campaigns across the country. As a result, it is a well known national animal welfare charity. It is a privately funded non-profit organization with more than 1 million supporters.

It was the first granted legal authority to make arrests for crimes against animals. Their aim is to do their work with non-violent approaches. The key area include caring for pets, providing positive outcomes for animals that are at risk, and helping animals who have suffered cruelty.
