British Wolf

At one time wolves were very common throughout Great Britain. Just a mere two thousand years ago, they were said to have numbered nearly ten thousand and to live in mainland Britain.

There is a great deal of evidence to back up this claim, including the naming of many children after the wolf, and tribal clans as well.

Additionally there were records of British kings paying tribute to other nobles in wolf hides as well as wolf bones found in burial sites.

Britain holds the distinction of being one of the first countries to completely exterminate the wolf from its shores.

The derogatory term, wolfs head, was applied to anyone who was less than honest and wolves began to be hated in the country.

The campaign to extinguish all wolves in the country was begun by Edward the First in 1281.
He decided personally to order the employment of Peter Corbet and gave him instructions” to take and destroy all the wolves he could find”, especially in the counties of “Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worchestershire, Shropshire and Staffordshire”.

The campaign against wolves by Edward I was quite successful and allusions to them became fewer in historical documentation. At an abbey in Herefordshire, an iron wolf head is supposedly a memorial to Edward’s campaign.

A report that in 1290 a wolf or wolves had destroyed some deer in a park – location unknown – seems to be the last reference to be found in historical documents.

It is reported that the last wolves in Britain were exterminated in the 16th century. Strangely, British wolves evaporated nearly without a trace.

In Scotland, a wilder less populous country, the wolves survived until the 17th century, albeit persecuted all the way to extinction.

Very little is told of them in historical lore and parish records, and a few stray bones and teeth here and there.

Sadly they were eradicated and are nearly completely forgotten by the country folk.clip image001 British Wolf

In the 1980′s and 1990′s the British Government signed conventions which agreed to consider reintroducing wolves and to promote public awareness about them. They have not yet concluded the consideration it seems.

I think that is wrong because animals have the right to live just as we do and how would they like it if all the animals in the world died! Then how would we live?

  • Amber Swoyer

Oh my horse gods! That is soo wrong in so many ways! People are soo cruel. I love wolves! I had no idea about many of the extinct species, until now. People have to learn to live with the animals and take what comes from them. Besides, wolves hardly ever if ever attack humans. Stupid people!

  • Elisabeth Boderman

That is the meanest thing i have ever heard of! I have never heard of the British Wolf before but i feel bad for the species. But this really helped me with my project on extinct animals.

    How Could Anyone Kill Wolves,
Because Of This ‘Edward’ Guy, The Whole Of The British Wolf Species Has Been Wiped Out, They Are Gorgeous Animals And Should Never Be Hunted.

  • paul

That makes me sick. i love animals and wolves cant beleive the were drove to exstinction by low life people. some people are really sick.

  • Angela

I think its really really bad cause if the people that killed them was the wolves and people went killing tham!!!!!!!

  • Rachael

    I love wolves!
Im from the uk and to find out that some sick, twisted people killed these beautful creatures makes me sick. No one has the right to wipe an animal from existance, no one! Regardless of its origins.

And that edward person! who the hell did he think he was? If it werent for his stupid lies, then this wouldnt have happend!
They better sort out their conclusions faster.

  • brianna

  • Connor Sykes

My Nan actually has some photos of british wolves from the 1920s.

  • Really, guys?

All this ‘who was this Edward guy’ stuff is ridiculous, he was the King of England at the time.

Your arguments against it are only based off of ‘it’s not nice’ or ‘you don’t have the right’

While I’m against the killing of them, you’re all just embarrassing yourselves with poor spelling, grammar and poorly thought responses to this.

Either find out the facts and compile a reasonable argument or quite simply stay off of the comment boards

    Agreed.

Back in the day, wolves were a large problem. If not for killing livestock and ruining individual people and small villages economically, i’m sure there’s likely a handful of cases where wolves have ambushed travellers.
It makes sense that the wolves were wiped out back in the day, though, I think it’s safe to reintroduce them now.

I’m from Staffordshire, and there are currently black panthers in the forest (Cannock Chase). There’v been a large number of sightings over the years, crossing roads and such. Considering how difficult they are to spot (Any animal enthusiast knows of their capability to meld into the darkness, for example), I think the large number of spottings says something about how many there may actually be.

In any case, my point is, over the last two (three?) decades, there’ve been no human or livestock deaths related to the black panther, so bring on the wolves.

  • Shadow

This was SOOOOO stupid!!!!! Why would someone do that to any animal? Humans seem to think that animals are for mans use and only that. What people dont seem to realize is that animals have feelings to and if someone did that to them they wouldnt like it.
